Winchburgh Workmen’s Institute
A recreation space for the village opened during the Second World War.
On 4 October 1940, Scottish Oils Ltd opened a new workmen's institute for its employees in Winchburgh. Around 120 people attended the opening ceremony.
The building included a billiards room with three tables, reading and recreation rooms, and a room with kitchen facilities. Its design featured bay windows, Scottish slate and Oregon pine furnishings.
Speakers recognised the difficult wartime circumstances and the village's contribution to national service. The institute was intended to provide a welcoming place for recreation and community life.
