Opening of Winchburgh Bowling Green
A new bowling green created through the efforts of local workers opened with a memorable ceremony.
The Marquis of Linlithgow formally opened Winchburgh's new bowling green in August 1913. Workers from the Oakbank Oil Company and the Hopetoun Estate had raised funds through subscriptions and a bazaar.
The green cost £480, with just £48 of debt remaining by the opening. Mrs A. C. Thomson threw the first jack and the Marquis delivered the first bowl, placing it close to the jack.
The Broxburn Orchestra provided music during the afternoon. The occasion celebrated both a new place for recreation and the determination of the workers who made it possible.
